Kandarik The Kangaroo Man |
To encourage the young Aboriginal men to be limited, the story of the kangaroo man, Kandarik was told by the elders of the tribe. According to the story, Kandarik once made a wooden drum which was so secret that no woman or uninitiated youth was even allowed to hear its sound, much less to see the drum. At the same time as Kandarik made the drum, he arranged a ceremony called the "Ubara", which he decreed must always be performed whenever the drum was sounded. The painting shows the Kangaroo Man, Kandarik wearing a feather head dress and holding between his paws a stick with which he beats the Ubara drum. |
